<image:title>440 Projects - Digital Studio 2.0</image:title>
<image:caption>An adaptive re-use project on the Walt Disney Studios Lot. A complete replacement of all building systems and interiors to transform an office complex into a state of the art Digital Post Production facility. Planned around exterior courtyard spaces, the privacy and security of the filmmakers and their content was balanced with and a sense communal workplace and all-hands gathering spaces. Critical workspaces were layered deeply into the planning, reached only after circulating through less secure intervening spaces. A digital screening room was incorporated into the facility by removing the building slab and excavating in order to achieve sight lines and screen height. The editorial rooms were designed to provide complete flexibility, with the ability to be configured for either picture or sound editing. Using a material and color palate implying a residential look and feel, richly textured and comfortable finishes were designed for the long term comfort of the filmmakers.</image:caption>

<image:title>440 Projects - UBM | Advanstar</image:title>
<image:caption>UBM/Advanstar’s new offices in Santa Monica exhibit a cutting edge example of open office planning, workflow expression, and the statement of company culture through interior design. The project was a consolidation of locations: UBM’s culture of shared resources, efficient planning for staff, and company immersion in their Client’s industries were infused in the project’s direction and process. Their existing Santa Monica location – the firm, the staff, and their shared values have identified closely with this area - was a primary factor in the decision to expand in this City, and become the building’s primary tenant. Sustainable practices by UBM have been recognized with Santa Monica’s Green Business certification. Energy efficiency is a core value of the company’s culture. Components incorporated include daylight harvesting, all LED lighting sources, demand metering, occupancy sensor controls, and sophisticated zone control. Elements of the design are intended to invoke Advanstar’s role in the fashion community: iconic stripes, emphasis on fabric, layered fabric, and graphic patterns that evoke raw material . The immersion of the workspace in this imagery is both to inspire the staff, and demonstrate commitment to the Client. Open office workflow (and the associated acoustic demand) is addressed through careful programming of open and enclosed spaces, subtle functional “barriers” which also act as work hubs, and shared collaborative spaces. The needs of staff as they transition from work phase, and the space types and their acoustic environment provides implicit keys as to each areas functional intent. All exterior views are retained and enhanced. A new stairway and floor opening is provided to vertically connect staff areas and increase collaboration. And an exterior courtyard, and operable exterior wall systems are further workspace amenities. Click here to download the Studio 440 Project sheet. </image:caption>

<image:title>440 Projects - Technicolor SGS</image:title>
<image:caption>Technicolor is the sole tenant in a new 120,000 sf, six-story building that forms a gateway onto Hollywood’s legendary Sunset-Gower Studios lot. An installation of light and color transforms the lobby of this video post-production facility into a canvas that recalls the firm’s heritage in film, looks to the digital future, and infers the technical complexity of the facility. The ground floor includes two 800 sf film edit screening rooms. A high-security 187,000 volume film & video tape vault fills one corner of the first and second floors. The third floor is dedicated to telecine bays clustered around localized machine rooms. Floor four is a mix of quality control and avid bays, along with the SAN room. DI operations are housed on the fifth floor, with executive offices and support operations topping out the sixth floor. Isolated floor and wall systems were used throughout at technical spaces. Access floor was used throughout levels 3 thru 5. Technical and critical emergency power systems were provided, as well as electrical and mechanical redundancy. <image:caption>A 3 full floor consolidation for a Tokyo based construction firm into a downtown Los Angeles high rise. Extensive workflow studies of the firms business operations were performed prior to any planning, and the design reflects the general contracting business model, from estimating and bidding, through project management to project close out and records storage. An inefficient elevator lobby core was transformed by use of an overhead fire curtain, allowing the removal of the enclosed lobby. This provided more useable area, simpler circulation and sweeping views to the exterior upon opening of the elevator doors. Business operations were further modernized, with the implementation of open work areas, and the elimination of enclosed offices. Attention to detail includes project manager’s workstations which are custom designed to insure handing of the desk surfaces for the left side binding of drawing sets, and flat display of standard format drawing sheets. <image:title>440 Projects - Octopus Luxury Yacht</image:title>
<image:caption>The utmost standards of design, craftsmanship, and engineering were called for in this recording studio aboard a privately-owned luxury yacht. Each and every component, including lighting fixtures, electrical finish, doors, hardware, fabrics, carpets, and furniture, was custom-built and hand-crafted by European artisans. Prior to final fit, the entire installation was mocked-up on the fabricator’s factory floor for verification and coordination. Blending plush comfort, unparalleled technique, and technical prowess, design parameters were pushed to provide the finest in luxury and convenience. Distinctive woven leather ceiling panels provide acoustic absorption and textural beauty. PMC monitors hang on custom ceiling brackets along the front wall amid an array of guitars displayed on custom wall racks. Floor fittings in multiple locations throughout the room secure the SSL console, factory-selected Steinway grand piano, and custom sectional sofa. A swing arm-mounted touch-screen panel unfolds from a sofa armrest alongside the Owner’s seat, allowing fingertip control of all systems and equipment. This screening room aboard a luxury yacht is designed to present the cinematic experience on its most intimate level. The room seats sixteen on plush hand-crafted two and three person sofa-style seating. Elongated front row seats include cushioned footrests for added comfort. Embodying the highest level of design and construction technique, finishes include horsehair fabric wall panels trimmed with metal reveals, ebony risers, and custom woven carpeting. Custom neoprene mounts welded off to ship steel at the floor, walls, and ceiling form a three dimensional isolation system for the acoustic shell of lead-core plywood. All theatrical systems are controlled from custom touch-screen panel in an ebony and black granite console beside the Owner’s centrally located seat and on in the projection booth. A fully-adjustable masking system adapts to the aspect ratio of any format displayed by the advanced digital projection system. Remote source fiber optic lighting in the cinema insures no distracting light sources. Speakers for the 5.1 surround system are concealed behind removable fabric wall panels. <image:caption>Located within a private Los Angeles Estate, this was a comprehensive renovation of a personal screening room. Careful attention to the Estate’s architectural context, as well as the Owner’s extensive modern painting collection informed the interior design decisions. Concealed and integrated into the interior design of the room are all new acoustic systems, as well as state of the art technology systems. A Dolby Atmos surround audio system and new digital projection were implemented. Wall panels of transondent horse-hair fabric, and ceiling panels of sound absorbent plaster insure the interior design in no way compromises the cinema experience and performance of the room. A custom designed, woven and detailed carpet brings a contemporary focal point to the room. Leather flooring tile perimeter areas enhance the texture and shape of the room. And extensive planning studies of seating layouts and sight-lines further insured an un-compromised experience. State of the art control technology was integrated, including control of all building systems, audio and projection, and access to the remote digital media library, all from touch panel interface.</image:caption>

<image:title>440 Projects - Netflix Egyptian Theater</image:title>
<image:caption>A complete renovation and historic rehabilitation of the historic Los Angeles Egyptian Theater. Built in 1922, and originally opened as a silent film venue with over a 1,000 seat capacity, the Egyptian has been extensively modified over the course of the past 99 years. Severe damage to the historic fabric has occurred, and most recently the original house was converted into a 2 screen venue. This renovation will return the theater to a single screen, and rehabilitate major areas of the interiors with a focus on providing historic accuracy as well as 1920’s movie palace grandeur. The primary intention of this project is to foreground the history; as well as the installation of state of the art projection and audio technology. Technical installations also include the ability for broadcast of events which will be taking place at the venue. These technical installations will be either concealed, or as discreet as possible to respect the original interior. A full structural upgrade is included in the scope of renovation, to bring the theater in conformance with current seismic codes. These upgrades will be concealed and will not alter the existing historic building elements. <image:title>440 Renderings - Multimedios Broadcast Center Expansion</image:title>
<image:caption>Currently in schematic design, this state-of-the-art broadcast center will be the initial phase in the Studio 440 master-planned renovation of this Mexican media company’s full-block production lot. The long-range plan for the site of their headquarters envisions several replacement buildings to add office and studio space, new gardens and parking, and site access and security upgrades. The new structure shown will house the studios and support facilities for 16 radio stations and a street-front, glass enclosed Master Control room for television broadcast operations. Seeking to establish a pedestrian-friendly scale, the long, low-slung building reworks one edge of the site. Video displays, graphic logos, and the Master Control room engage the passerby. A new lobby on axis with existing gardens beyond will become the site’s main, secure point of access. A top floor cafeteria and executive offices are sheltered by a broad, folded roof plane that serves as a platform for satellite dishes. Alternately solid and transparent, rhythmic variation of the façade’s dual screen wall system is manipulated to control daylight and provide security. <image:caption>Located within the first major building constructed on the Disney Studios Burbank Lot, Walt Disney’s personal screening rooms were originally designed and furnished in 1939 by Kem Weber. A pair of identical rooms, side by side with a shared projection booth, a comprehensive renovation had never been undertaken. Our firm carefully researched, from the Disney Archives, original documentation of the design. Using the archived design intent, renovations were planned to return the rooms to their original aesthetic, and allow integration of state of the art technology, acoustic design, projection and audio systems. The original room geometry, faceted wall and ceiling systems were recreated in fabric; original soffits were uncovered and restored; the hardwood wainscoting was designed using the original details. And a new riser and step system was inspired by Kem Weber’s streamlined and iconic Airline Armchair. Click here to download the Studio 440 Project sheet. </image:caption>

<image:caption>An all new studio facility for a film score composer, on an exclusive residential estate located in the historical Errol Flynn Estate. The studio building and site planning were designed to complement an existing glass and limestone modern residence, but to retain the privacy of the home and its exterior gardens from the daily routine of the studio. Further, the complete structure was designed to provide total sound privacy, or isolation to the site. The studio includes an expansive Live Room, a Control Room, and a subterranean audio editing suite; as well as client entry and amenity areas. A rich and natural material palette was used throughout, including American black walnut, fabrics, and carefully designed board form exposed concrete. Intended to provide a background of comfort and warmth for long working hours. We use computer renderings as a design communication tool for all of our clients. Whether residential or commercial clients we find that computer renderings are an essential tool to communicate our design ideas as realisitically as possible. We never want our clients to be surprised once their project is built. Click here to download the Studio 440 Project sheet. </image:caption>

<image:caption>This high-end, private facility on director James Cameron’s Malibu compound was designed as a multi-functional technical space, equipped for both standard and 3D screening, editing, and pre-dubbing. Located at a former residence used for production company offices, this small addition was designed with a fully-isolated interior shell. Acoustic treatments were concealed by aluminum-trimmed fabric wall panels accented by a darker Corian wainscot. Wide, stepped platforms were designed to allow unobstructed sight lines from the projection booth and all seats within the room. The custom editing console included monitors mounted on articulating arms, easily lowered to provide editors with a clear view of the front screen. Designed for quick disassembly, the edit console could be easily replaced with sectional sofa components to create a screening room. THX and Dolby certified, the facility was designed to be capable of both 35mm and digital film projection. A fully-adjustable theatrical masking system enabled accommodation of different screen aspect ratios.</image:caption>

<image:title>440 Renderings - NRG Recording Studios Verner Panton Room</image:title>
<image:caption>For a now-postponed expansion of this popular facility, favored by musicians for its whimsical, thematic studios, plans were developed to add two new recording suites in a second building a few doors down from their current location. A range of client amenities were incorporated, with space allotted for a future third studio. Work included upgrade of the nondescript facade. The design vocabulary was inspired by visionary Danish architect and designer Verner Panton, whose futuristic designs became synonymous with 1960’s pop culture. Not simply applied as pastiche, Panton’s signature forms and elements were rethought and repurposed by applying a holistic design philosophy. Just as Panton transcended traditional notions of the surface as a distinct entity, sinuous flowing perimeters carve out spaces. Sharp corner angles are replaced by soft rounded contours. Fields of spherical forms cover walls and ceilings to disperse sound, marrying referential forms with purposeful function. Circular air registers and concealed lighting exemplify the care given to integrate building systems and protect the design’s visual integrity.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Located adjacent to the new Facebook campus in Menlo Park, the new audio and music production facility for Oculus VR and Facebook Music combines both foley and music recording facilities for the creation of audio content for the Oculus Rift games and apps. The 5,700 square foot tenant improvement project includes a main control room, a foley / music studio with conventional foley pits and video projection, edit rooms and a voice over booth. Additional new support spaces included a green room, new restrooms, new kitchen and meeting spaces. The client required the ability to record throughout the new facility and almost all of the spaces were connected back to a central equipment room via an audio panel and overhead cable tray. The existing 1960’s style office building selected required significant structural and ADA modifications to accommodate the new program. Approximately 1,500 square feet of the second floor was removed to provide the necessary ceiling height for the foley / music studio and control room. All new mechanical and electrical systems were added to support the new technical spaces. Click here to download the Studio 440 Project sheet.</image:caption>

<image:title>440 Renderings - Warner Music Group Design Proposal</image:title>
<image:caption>Proposed within the Ford Factory in the Downtown Arts District, this response to an RFP included detailed test fit plans and multiple renderings, as well as an extensive development of programmatic and technical requirements. The project was comprised of four music recording studios; six composing suites; video editing; as well as a live showcase performance stage: the project was intended as a state of the art consolidation. Planning was intended to encourage encounters and collaboration among artists and employees, by the use of a 2-story central atrium with shared amenities. Circulation and studio entries all flowed from and through this main space, in an effort to invert the typically cloistered studio environment. The showcase performance stage, which doubled as a sound stage, fronted to the atrium with large sliding doors to allow it to open for a larger audience, and to encourage interaction. A 2 story LED panel wall opposite the theater provided the opportunity for changing graphics, branding, as well as light and video art installations. These upgrades will be concealed and will not alter the existing historic building elements.</image:caption>
